In Touch

Blind children do not experience the challenge of going after a brightly colored object the way sighted children do. They only start to explore their environment when expressly encouraged to, and learn in their own way, to recognize their own object in it, like a rattle. A little later their world becomes bigger and they will be confrontend with new information, like the existence of a garden gate. They will discover that not all garden gates are the same and that they don't open all the same way. Beyond the garden gate they will meet a great number of bewildering objects. Take a bike rack, for instance. What on earth can be the purpose of these metal poles that sprout from the ground? There is so much information for them to discover and attaching meaning is not always easy. That is why parental guidance on this journey of discovery is of the utmost importance.

"In Touch Helping your blind child discover the world" is devided in three parts.Part one contains back ground information about the function of touch and the factors that influence tactual functioning. Part two contains a wealth of practical tips and ideas to stimulate your child's tactual development. Also are included a great number of photographs which show blind children engaged in different activities. Part three tells the stories of four couples with blind children and how they overcame the challenges they faced.
